Olympique Lyon's Michael Bastos played as an undisputed starter for Brazil during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. His impressive performance as a left back earned him commendation from the football community and provided the athlete with aggressive bargaining chips to choose his next season. After the stellar sample of athleticism he unleashed during the 2010 World Cup, Bastos made the decision to join Lyon.

Football Aid is a U.K.-based charity that offers the experience of the game for the general public, aged 18 years and above. Its objective is “to allow fans, who have only been able to dream about it, the chance to experience the thrill of match day: to pull on their favourite shirt, walk down the tunnel to the sound of the crowd, and play an adrenaline fuelled 90 minutes on the hallowed turf of the Club they support.” It holds its events at top football clubs across the U.K. Internationally, Football Aid has also held events at stadia like Hampden Park and The Millennium Stadium.

Being the hardcore football fan that I am, I, Leopoldo Lares, would want nothing more than to be able to register for any event (yes, I am that desperate) just to have the ultimate football experience. Oh, sweet revenge: Leopoldo Lares cheers his favorite hero, Michael Ballack

Before Leopoldo Lares worshipped Wayne Rooney as one of the best football players in history, there is his favorite hero, Michael Ballack.

Former German captain Michael Ballack had four successful campaigns with Chelsea FC, with three FA silverwares and a league title under his belt. He is among the top goal scorers of Germany and was selected by football great Pelé as one of FIFA’s 100 Greatest Living Players. He was the UEFA Midfielder of the Year in 2002, and won the German Football of the Year award in 2002, 2003, and 2005.

When Ballack underwent an ankle surgery while playing for Chelsea FC, he was absent from the pitch for eight months. When he returned, Ballack unleashed the great midfielder that he is. Leopoldo Lares saw how he led Chelsea on an impressive win against Newcastle United and was dubbed as Man of the Match for his striking performance against Manchester United.

Despite his stellar skills however, Chelsea FC decided not to renew his contract. With that, Ballack returned to Bayer Leverkusen. With the transfer comes the bittersweet opportunity for Ballack to once again set foot in Stamford Bridge, yet this time not as a Blue but as an opponent. As Bayer Leverkusen is drawn in Group E of the EUFA Champion’s League this season along with Chelsea FC, Ballack may just have his revenge.

And Lares is excited to see the midfielder unfurl his wings and destroy Chelsea FC’s defense.

Before going any further, let me state for the record that I, Leopoldo Lares, am not speaking for any group or organization. The following blog is based on my observations and frustrations. After all, how many athletes have passed on opportunities for stardom in the international playing field because they decided they were too good as football players—and have better futures as artists, commercial models, and endorsers?

I cannot emphasize this enough: football is a team sport. There should be no star player. All players should focus on honing their skills, improving teamwork, and strengthening rapport with their teammates. A single person cannot win a football game—but a good and synchronized team can.

That being said, I, football fanatic and Coach Leopoldo Lares, will proceed to cite an example.

David Robert Joseph Beckham

Everybody knows Beckham, thanks to the Bend It Like Beckham movie. Beckham started his career in 1992 as a player for Manchester United's U-17 team. Afterwards, he signed up with Preston North End, followed by Real Madrid, and football powerhouse A.C. Milan. A promising athlete, he became England's captain for six years, leading the team to a wondrous performance in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Yet Beckham is more known for his outrageous hairstyles and famous wife, Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice. The Beckhams were dubbed as fashion plates as they were sought out as highly paid spokespeople for designer brands, hair stylists, and fitness specialists, among others. True enough, even I, Leopoldo Lares, heard of the Beckhams' "private welcoming party" when the footballer switched hides and left England to play for a Major League Soccer team, the Los Angeles Galaxy. The private party was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the event was attended by A-list celebrities including Jim Carrey, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cruise, Mr. and Mrs. Will Smith, and, (be still, my beating heart!) award-winning director, Steven Spielberg.

I lost my train of thought after mentioning those impressive celebrities. But forgive me, I don't have any additions on Beckham's career, as I lost track of him when he joined LA Galaxy. This just goes to show that Beckham shone on the limelight as a celebrity, and not as a footballer.

Leopoldo Lares on Manchester United: the History of the Red Devils’ Badge

In the Premiere League, the Manchester United is definitely the most successful club. Leopoldo Lares knows this and is one of the many fans who root for the team known as the Red Devils. Having won the Premier League title 12 times already, the Red Devils have been popular around the globe. Because of their accomplishments, their badge has been one of the most recognizable logos in the world, printed on different merchandizes often bought by football fans. Many though are not aware of the badge’s history.

The Manchester United crest was actually based on Manchester City Council’s coat of arms. In the Red Devils’ finals victory in the 1963 F.A. Cup and 1968 European Cup, as well as in the big games they played in during the period, the arms were seen embroidered into their shirts.

Leopoldo Lares is pretty much aware of the meaning of the symbolisms presented in the arms. The ship (with the ship canal) and the globe are a representation of Manchester’s trading prowess; the swarm of bees covering the globe was included due to the insects’ industrious characteristic. Meanwhile, the antelope is seen in the arms wearing a gold chain which symbolizes the city’s innovative engineering; the lion wears a caste crown since Manchester grew up around the Roman settlement of Castlefield.

The newly designed badge was actually featured in the 1960s. The shield and the coat were taken from the arms, and the words “Manchester United” were written on the top banner and the “Football Club” on the bottom banner. The design was based on Matt Busby’s innovative style of play that he brought to Manchester United. The three yellow stripes were replaced by the famous devil symbol in 1970 in reference to the team’s nickname, the Red Devils.

Leopoldo Lares and Paul the Oracle: How Paul the Octopus Helped Birth Champions

FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa would not have been complete without Paul the Octopus, with his eight tentacles, eight selections to make, and 8,000 death threats to avoid. Leopoldo Lares, along with the football community, watched to see what predictions the marine oracle would make.

Paul the Oracle lived in an aquarium at the Sea Life Center in Oberhausen, Germany. His octopus-turned-sage status was cemented when he correctly prophesized that Germany would win over Argentina, England, Ghana, and Australia. The picking happened this way: two transparent boxes with flags of opposing teams were placed in Paul’s aquarium, both boxes containing mussels for Paul’s lip-smacking snack. Whichever snack Paul ate first would win the match.

Then something extraordinary happened: Paul peacefully settled atop Spain’s container and ate the morsel, while Germans watched in horror as their pet octopus predicted their downfall. Banners of “Octopus Can Be Wrong” were unfurled at the semis, yet the prediction came true.

Leopoldo Lares laughed aloud when he saw the headlines the next day: Germans were calling for a public roasting of the oracle, while newspapers and websites offered suggestions on how to cook and devour Paul the Octopus who sided with the Spaniards. The mollusk signed his death warrant when he chose Spain over Netherlands to win the World Cup. Paul devoured his clam and swam away from the intrigue. Yum.

The reaction of his blessing was immediate, as the Spaniards started running the headline, “The octopus Paul makes us champions.”

Unfortunately, Paul’s predicting prowess was halted forever when the seer fell in deep slumber, so deep that he didn’t wake up. Paul passed away on October 26, 2010 of old age.

Leopoldo Lares and the Red Devils: The Crowning Triumph of English Premier League

While football enthusiast Leopoldo Lares may be incensed with the two-match ban imposed by the FA on Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the Barclays Premiere League, Lares is now jumping up and down with joy for the recent success of the Red Devils in the English Premier League 2010/11.

The Reds will march proudly in a victory parade on May 30, 2011 to celebrate Manchester United’s record-breaking 19th English Premier League Title, and, potentially and hopefully, its fourth UEFA Champions League trophy.

The Old Trafford outfit cinched the title and the silverware with a draw at Blackburn on May 14th. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney converted a penalty and secured the much needed point to steal the title. Leopoldo Lares echoes the sentiments of FIFA when it says, “The Scottish coaching legend [Sir Alex Ferguson] has thus fulfilled his oft-stated dream of displacing Liverpool as the English league’s all-time most successful club.”

According to Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill, the parade was a result of the fans’ wishes. “Breaking the record of league title wins is a big day in the club’s illustrious history,” he says. “We have received many letters and emails from fans encouraging us to hold a public celebration of that achievement and we believe this is a fitting way to mark it.”

Leopoldo Lares to Japan: You’ll Never Walk Alone

Leopoldo Lares offers an ode to the bravery of the Japanese nation.

The March 11 disaster may have destroyed the physical plane of Japan—but it can never extinguish the bright flame of passion, camaraderie, and honor in the Japanese people. The Japanese are recognized worldwide for their bravery and dignity—as it will be illustrated in this story:

The soccer ball is round and it continues to roll as the Japan Football Association (JFA) staged a charity match in order to raise funds for its disaster-stricken landscape. “Twelve overseas-based stars returned to form a full-strength national team,” FIFA reports. These stars include the ranks of Inter Milan defender Yuto Nagatomo and Wolfsburg midfielder Mokoto Hasebe, who is also the Samurai Blue captain.

Leopoldo Lares felt his heart swell with pride along with the 47,000-strong crowd as they chanted “Nippon, Nippon,” as the country’s soccer stars poured their heart out, despite the wrenching pain they all feel upon their homeland’s wretched state. The match was a tearjerker for the patriots as Shinji Okazaki, Yasuhito Endo, and Kazuyoshi Miura scored goals.

Okazaki himself experienced the earthquake, and shared his feelings saying, “I am alive today because the people around me helped me out. Now it is time for me to return the support and help, and today’s game marks the first step in giving back.”

“The pitch was brimming with players with great technical quality and they put on a great game, but more than the game it was about everyone gathered here showing togetherness for the Japanese football family and the country as a whole,” Alberto Zaccheroni, The Japanese national team manager, said, highlighting the best qualities of the match.

Leopoldo Lares and the Rest of the Football Community Keep the Ball Rolling, Amidst Tragedies and Heartache

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Japan last March 11, 2011. The quake insinuated a tsunami, which further ravaged the country. Leopoldo Lares and the rest of the world could only watch in horror as the huge waves plummeted down populated areas.

The devastation left by the quake and tsunami paralyzed Japan in more ways than one. Stocks fell, citizens evacuated, plus the threat of a nuclear meltdown continued to rise. Though the world continues to help Japan by giving donations and other forms of assistance, there is only so much material and monetary support can do.

On March 15, 2011, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) decreed that all UEFA matches scheduled for the week should start with a full minute of silence before kickoff. Leopoldo Lares, watching from the safety of his couch, stood along with the enraptured crowd. The audience stood in silence, bowing their heads in respect, as the players and officials in the pitch look on.

The enormity of this silence is best explained by the UEFA President, Michel Platini, when he said that “the entire European football family will stand united on this pitch this week before our matches, in order to express our deepest sympathy and full support to the Japanese people, and we wish them continued strength in tackling the subsequent problems following the tragedy.”

Leopoldo Lares Bows His Head in Respect: Football Legend Ronaldo Retires

Football Legend Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima threw down the towel and retired from the prestigious sport. Leopoldo Lares echoes the sentiment of the football industry when he uttered: “No other player can wear the Number 9 and command the same respect we all bestowed upon Ronaldo.”

February 14, 2011 is a sad day for footballers all over the world as the Goalscoring Goliath finally decided to hang his soccer cleats. Though still young by all standards, the years of his fierce competitiveness and extraordinary skills have taken its toll on Ronaldo’s 34-year-old body. The living legend is very remorseful when he said that he wants to continue playing, but his body is already giving up.

Leopoldo Lares Monserrate and Rearing Children: The Most Difficult and Rewarding Experience

My name is Leopoldo Lares Monserrate, and I am a proud parent. I usually blog about soccer and coaching, but today I will write about my three children.

My kids Marc, Joshua, and Emily are all at different stages of life. Aged thirteen, nine, and six, respectively, the three of them continue to push my wife and I to the limits. There are times when Marc, who still wins championships and MVP awards, would refuse to talk to us for no apparent reason. Joshua, another ace soccer player, would suddenly demand to be kept on the sides. And Emily, my darling little princess, would suddenly throw her soccer cleats and demand to be given ballet flats.

Many have chuckled to see the independent sports consultant and nationally recognized soccer coach Leopoldo Lares Monserrate be irked by his children. But despite my children’s changing temperaments and moods, I am still proud of them and their achievements.

See, rearing children is a very difficult task. As a father, I have to ensure that my children would grow up to be responsible and well-rounded citizens. They have to survive on their own in the future, when my wife and I would not be there to guide them. Their rebelliousness at youth could actually be the spark that will keep them alive in the future.

While sports like soccer have been widely commercialized, they can still teach valuable life lessons to athletes, coaches, and fans alike. Nationally renowned soccer coach Leopoldo Lares Sultan shares how his players can prepare for life’s greatest battles through scrimmages.

Scrimmages or practice games are often used by coaches to gauge how a team will perform in high-caliber competitions. Scrimmages are usually done by dividing teams in two and having the different sides compete in a mock game. At the end of a scrimmage session, the team with the most number of goals will win.

However, Sultan took a different approach for his teams’ scrimmages. Instead of dividing a single team in two parts, he combined two different teams, mixed their players, and then threw them on the field to figure out how to organize themselves.
